Individual Therapy
I believe that therapy can provide a space to solve problems and heal wounds. It can be a place of hope and new beginnings. Within a trusting, collaborative relationship with the right therapist, it can provide structure for people to build strengths, support, and resources, and to discover solutions. It can also be a place to continue to grow and to learn more about yourself.
I am skilled at helping my clients to create clear goals, but I am flexible in providing space for more open exploration when that is desired. My style is compassionate, client-centered, and interactive. I ask questions when I have them and acknowledge patterns when I observe them. My practice is informed by narrative, systemic, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic thinking. What this means is that I consider you the expert about your life and I think of myself as a consultant whose job it is to explore meanings and find answers. I will help you consider how your relationships and community may support problems and solutions. I will work with you to examine behaviors and beliefs that are more or less useful to your life.
Couples and Relationship Counseling
One of my true passions is working with people in relationships. My focus in relationship counseling is usually on improving communication and problem-solving skills, understanding relationship patterns, increasing empathy towards one another, and improving the sense of connection between partners. This work can feel more focused and results-oriented than individual therapy may seem at times. Some of the relationship issues I have worked with have included communication problems, sexual issues, affairs and infidelity, and co-parenting issues. When working with relationships, I sometimes give exercises to practice at home between sessions.
Group Counseling
I occasionally offer group therapy services. These have included support groups for individuals and couples, and sexual identity and gender identity groups. I sometimes offer therapy groups around other themes. You may contact me for a schedule of upcoming group sessions or to request one on a specific topic. I currently offer an ongoing Dissertation Support Group. This group is open to new members at the beginning of each month. Please contact me if you are interested.
Dissertation Coaching
I offer a weekly Dissertation group in my San Francisco office on Wednesdays afternoons from 4:00 – 4:55. I keep the fee low ($35 per week, commit to one month at a time) so that students can get support and structure around their stalled dissertation process. The group also meets outside of our sessions to co-work together.
Sometimes students who are unable to attend the group prefer to meet with me one-on-one for more directive private coaching on their dissertation. For private coaching, I charge $100 for a 50 minute session. I can help you explore where you are stuck in the process and help you to build more support into your approach. We will set clear goals for the weeks ahead. You can practice implementing new strategies and bring back reports to our sessions. These sessions can be scheduled weekly, monthly, or just when you need them to help keep you on-track. Contact me to learn more.
Consultation Services
I provide consultation services to other mental health professionals who have concerns about technology issues and how to manage their own online presence while minimizing its impact upon the clinical relationship. I also provide consultation to therapists with questions about working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, poly, or BDSM-identified clients. These consultations may be in-person or over the phone. Find out more about my fees for these services on my consultation page or feel free to contact me directly to see if I can help you.
