Course Description:
The Internet and social media are offering a number of new clinical and ethical challenges for those who provide face-to-face mental health services. These challenges include extra-therapeutic contacts between therapists and their clients, questions about what distinguishes personal from professional activities online, and a lack of clearly developed policies related to our online behaviors and interactions.

This course offers an introduction to digital ethics and to various social networking sites and activities. It provides guidelines for anticipating and managing the problems that may arise for practitioners who are using these sites. Applicable ethical standards will be addressed. The instructor will incorporate vignettes and encourage discussion to address the different ways clinicians are addressing these issues.

Learning objectives:
• Describe social media and summarize several popular social media sites and services.
• Distinguish between one’s personal and professional activities on the Internet.
• Identify the ethical challenges that may arise from engaging in activities on the Internet.
• Construct a social media policy for one’s office to address potential boundary issues with clients.

Presenter’s Bio:

Keely Kolmes, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in San Francisco, CA. She serves as Director of Digital Communication for APA Division 42, Psychologists in Independent practice. Dr. Kolmes writes, does research, and provides consultation and training on clinical and ethical issues related to social networking and technology. Her Private Practice Social Media Policy has been frequently cited and is a recommended sample document for clinicians by the APA Insurance Trust. She has published a New York Times Op-Ed on the challenge of consumer reviews of mental health services. Course description:

This unique and first-of-its kind course offers an introduction to various social networking sites and activities and provides guidelines for how to manage the concerns that may arise for practitioners who are using these sites. Applicable ethical standards will be addressed. While this course focuses on issues that may be of concern to clinicians who provide online therapy and who also maintain a presence on social media sites, online treatment is not specifically addressed in this course.

The first section of the course is an Introduction to the clinical and ethical issues that get raised for psychotherapists using Social Media. The second section addresses online transparency of both clients and therapists, inclusive of what therapists may intentionally or unintentionally make available online, and whether they should access client information online. Section three looks at friend and contact requests on sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn, and also examines the challenges of Facebook business pages and the blocking feature on such sites. The fourth section addresses Twitter, Status Updates, and Location-based check-in sites. The fifth section discusses the ethical issues that are raised by consumer review sites and business listings. Section six focuses on email exchanges between therapists and clients, record keeping, and digital security. Section seven provides sample Social Media Policies, and section eight, the last one, includes links to ethics codes for psychotherapists, and additional online resources.

Description:

This 3 hour training focuses on Web 2.0 social networking and its relevance to providers serving the LGBT community. Clinicians will get an overview of how clients may use the Internet and how various sites and services may intersect with treatment. We will cover clinicians’ personal and professional online presence and how this may crossover into one’s clinical role. We will discuss clinical, legal, and ethical issues related to the Internet and private practice. A step-by-step guide to managing privacy settings will be provided as well as a sample of a Social Media Policy for private practice. There will be time for discussion of clinical vignettes.

This Friday, October 23rd, I will be presenting a 5 hour Continuing Education training that I organized for the annual Northern California Training Directors Conference. This conference will be attended by Training Directors and clinical trainees of fifteen Bay Area college counseling centers.

I will be joined by James Lyda, Ph.D., Staff Psychologist at the Tang Center at UC Berkeley, who will present a morning segment on research on Facebook and on college students’ usage of social networking sites. I’m very excited about this training and about hearing about the clinical issues that Training Directors and interns are encountering.
