This is an introductory course for psychotherapists of any discipline (psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, etc.). The grievance procedure is included in the online materials.

To receive CE‘s, you will be given a link to an online post-test in which you are required to register your name and license. You must pass this post-test at a 75% rate. There will be a minimum of six questions for each CE unit offered. No partial units will be provided if your responses fall below 75% on the test.

After completing this program, clinicians will be able to:

Identify basic cultural concepts created by the BDSM subculture that can positively address issues of concern in providing mental health services.
Describe the distinction between BDSM activities and abuse.

About the Instructors:

Ryan G. Witherspoon, M.A. is a clinical psychology Ph.D. student at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in Los Angeles, as well as a researcher, speaker, and community educator for alternative sexualities and relationships. He frequently publishes and presents nationally regarding kink/BDSM, consensually non-monogamous relationships, sex-positivity, and other topics. Ryan’s current research focuses on the intersections of consensual non-monogamy with stigma and resilience. You can find out more about Ryan’s work via his website at www.RyanWitherspoon.com.

Richard Sprott received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from UC Berkeley in 1994. His current work researches identity development and health/well-being in people who express alternative sexualities and non-traditional relationships, with a special emphasis on kink/BDSM sexuality, and polyamory or consensual non-monogamy. These efforts highlight the ways in which stigma, prejudice, minority dynamics, language, identity development and community development all intersect and affect each other. Richard currently teaches courses in the Department of Human Development and Women’s Studies at California State University, East Bay and graduate and undergraduate level courses at various universities in the Bay Area, including UC Berkeley, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Holy Names University.

Keely Kolmes, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Oakland, CA. Dr. Kolmes did her dissertation on bias in clinical care towards the BDSM community and has presented on kink to psychologists since 2013. In 2009, Dr. Kolmes founded Bay Area Open Minds, a therapist community for clinicians serving polyamorous, kinky, and gender diverse clients. This non-profit now has over 200 clinicians. Dr. Kolmes currently is serving her second term on the Ethics Committee of the California Psychological Association. She is a member of the 2014 class of the APA Leadership Institute of Women Psychologists, and has been elected Member at Large of APA Division 42 for 2015 – 2017. She is also the Council Representative for California Psychological Association at APA 2017 – 2019. She has co-authored the 5th revision of Ed Zuckerman’s The Paper Office released in November 2016.
